Ages 4 to 6
Squirrels
Squirrels is the youngest section of Scouting, for 4 to 6 year olds. It's where little ones play, learn and get outdoors, make new friends and start to build skills for life.
Join the waiting listSquirrels is not running yet. We are hoping to start a drey in 2027, and whether that happens depends on how many families are interested and how many adults can help. If your child is 4 to 6, or will be by then, add them to the waiting list and we will be in touch as soon as we know more.
What Squirrels do
A Squirrels group is called a drey. Sessions are built around games, stories, crafts and time outdoors, all designed for the early years, so young children can try new things, grow in confidence and have lots of fun.
Play and learn
Games, songs, stories and crafts that help young children learn by doing, at their own pace.
Get outdoors
Exploring nature, getting a bit muddy and discovering the world on their doorstep.
Make friends
Sharing, taking turns and working together in a small, friendly group.
Squirrels:
- Try new things and discover what they enjoy
- Have fun and explore the outdoors
- Make friends and learn to work together
- Grow in confidence and independence
- Get ready for the next adventure: Beavers at 6
Camps and sleepovers
Their first sleepover, usually close to home and just one night. Camps are the part of Scouting children talk about all year.
Squirrels' uniform
Squirrels wear a red sweatshirt with their badges sewn on, and our group necker. They don't need a uniform straight away. Once they've settled in, it's a great place to show off the badges they earn.

Squirrels' badges
Squirrels can earn a range of exciting badges as they grow. Here are just a few. See the full list of Squirrels activity badges on the Scouts website, or track your child's badges in the Parent Portal.

Chief Scout's Acorn Award
This is the highest award a Squirrel can earn. To get it, they need to complete all four Challenge Awards (All About Adventure, All About Me, All Around Us and All Together) and any two Activity Badges of their choice. If they haven't finished when they move up, they can complete it in their first term at Beavers. Find out more on the Chief Scout's Acorn Award page.
